The Dark Knight (2008)黑暗騎士

The Dark Knight is two films in one:

the first half is a rather usual caped-crusader setup for an extraordinary Greek tragedy which follows.



The Joker, in a pitch-perfect performance by Heath Ledger,

is neither good guy nor bad guy. In fact, like the film, he transcends his role,

becoming a stand-in for chaos, for the anarchy of life itself.



There are allusions to terrorism throughout this film,

but the Joker is not a terrorist. He is THE TERROR itself.

We the audience live through his life-and-death decisions in an almost intimate way,

which is the secret of this film's effectiveness.



Without giving away an intrinsic part of the plot,

The Joker grooms a fellow agent of terror, who he hopes will see the world for the anarchy it is.



What happens throughout the last half is utterly unpredictable, and you will barely feel the 2:47 hours pass by.



Added to this, there is not a false step in acting in the whole movie by the lead characters.



Bale, Caine, Freeman, even Gyllenhaal,

and especially the last 3 of Eckardt, Ledger, Oldman: they are all pitch-perfect.



The Dark Knight catapults past its genre into something else. It may well be the best of its kind.



This is THE must-see film of 2008, so far.
